Safety Tips

We refer to SameGrain as the “privacy first” social discovery platform, because SameGrain makes every effort to protect your identity and will never disclose your e-mail address. However, you must protect it too! Please follow these tips to ensure you have a safe experience with SameGrain.

Protect Your Privacy
If you want to protect your privacy, DO NOT use your real full name as your user name! Instead, be creative and create an identity that reflects your interests or anything other than your full name. Just keep it clean.

Maintain Your Privacy
Never post personal contact information in your profile and don’t share your real name, phone number, email address, home address, employer or any other identifying information in messages or conversations until you have established a reasonable level of trust with the other party.

Mulch Creeps and Report Abusive Users
We define creeps as anyone that makes you feel uncomfortable. Creeps often post inappropriate comments, intimidate or threaten you, post offensive or frightening photos, tell lies, ask for money or donations, send spam, and push you to reveal personal or financial information. Sadly, creeps exist everywhere online, which is why SameGrain developed the “mulch” feature. Mulching puts you in control of your connections and lets you help us police SameGrain.

Users don’t know when they have been mulched, but mulching ensures they cannot connect with you again unless you recycle them from your “mulch pile.” Immediately “mulch” any SameGrain user who misbehaves or treats you in an abusive way and report the behavior to SameGrain by emailing safety@SameGrain.com. Call law enforcement if you feel threatened or unsafe. Your involvement will help keep

SameGrain safe.

Know People Online Before Meeting Anyone Offline
Use the tools available through SameGrain that protect your anonymity to get to know someone before meeting them in person. We highly recommend using free live video chat tools such as Skype to meet people visually online before physically meeting face-to-face.
CAUTION: make sure your user name on these services or the background of your live video does not disclose your identity. If you would like more information about someone, we suggest using the Internet and government resources available to everyone.

Offline Gatherings
When you meet someone new on SameGrain, and use other tools like live online video to ensure the person is real and honest, it can be exciting to meet in person for the first time. However, we still suggest you never meet anyone by yourself (bring a parent or friend) and ALWAYS MEET AND STAY IN A PUBLIC LOCATION. NEVER MEET IN A HOME OR OTHER PRIVATE OR REMOTE AREA.

Tell a friend or family member where you are going and who you are meeting. Bring a cell phone, stay sober, always be in control of your own transportation, and never leave your beverage or personal belongings unattended. NEVER go to the person’s home or bring them back to yours on the first meeting. Continue to meet in public until you know the person really well. And, if you are ever pressured to go some place more private, end it and leave at once.

Safety Tips for Mobile Use
Meeting a fellow SameGrain user via our mobile app can help fast track a conversation and open your eyes to people you otherwise might ignore. This can be a rewarding experience, however, always act with caution when communicating with any stranger. Do not treat the situation any differently than if you met a stranger without the assistance of SameGrain.

Stay in a public location and do not disclose your real name until you feel ready and confident that the person you’ve been chatting with is honest and safe. Remember to always trust your instincts. If you feel unsafe or threatened, cease communication and report any misbehavior immediately by emailing safety@SameGrain.com. Contact law enforcement if you feel you are in immediate danger.

Kids
If you are younger than 13, you cannot use SameGrain. Be patient, SameGrain will still be here when you are old enough to use it.

Teens
We recommend you only communicate with users in your age range and strongly suggest you “mulch” any users that act creepy. Creepy people lie a lot, and often will tell you they are younger than they really are. Also, NEVER, we repeat NEVER, meet anyone offline without being accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Parents
SameGrain is designed for adults and teenagers 13 and older. We encourage you to talk with your teenagers to make sure they understand what SameGrain is and the importance of following the safety recommendations.

Adults
While SameGrain is not designed to be a dating site it is possible you could meet someone through SameGrain and later become romantically involved.  Just remember that sex with an underage person is illegal. It does not matter if that person lied about their age. It’s illegal and you will go to prison.

SameGrain is committed to maintaining a safe, trusted online community. We want to make it easy for people to find each other, but it’s critically important that the experience be positive for all of our users. Please help us keep SameGrain a trusted community by being vigilant and smart.
